Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made an unusual discovery while exploring the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July. He stumbled upon a rare plant species not commonly found in the Arctic, which could have implications for the spread of invasive species in Northern regions as temperatures rise.
Koehler found a brownish weed-like plant known as bladderwort in a pond during his walk. Despite its unremarkable appearance to the untrained eye, Koehler recognized the plant’s unique characteristics.
This carnivorous plant is adorned with small black balls called bladders that contain partially digested flies. Typically found in more southern regions, bladderwort rarely ventures into the tundra environment.
The only previous documented sighting of this plant in the area dates back to 2012 when a team of scientists discovered samples of bladderwort near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. The findings were published in the scientific journal Phytokeys.
Koehler’s observation has led him to believe that the changing climate may be influencing the migration of plant species towards the North. While the Arctic has historically had few invasive species due to its harsh conditions, the warming climate is creating a more favorable habitat for plants not native to the region, potentially altering the ecosystem.
Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, shares Koehler’s concerns. Sokoloff, who was part of the 2012 study that uncovered bladderwort in the Arctic, worries about the introduction of non-native plants that could outcompete local species.
Various factors, such as birds, cargo ships, and human visitors, may inadvertently introduce plant seeds into Arctic ecosystems. This has raised apprehension among experts, as invasive species have caused ecological damage in other parts of Canada, like the invasive grass phragmite in Ontario.
While Koehler’s discovery may not pose an immediate threat, the potential influx of invasive plants into the Arctic could disrupt the delicate balance of native flora. Scientists estimate that over 2,500 species have the capability to invade Arctic territories, highlighting the need for vigilance in monitoring these changes.
Koehler plans to send a sample of the bladderwort he found in Iqaluit to the Museum of Nature for further analysis, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the plant’s expansion northward.
