Two individuals shot and killed three people at an Islamic center in San Diego before taking their own lives with self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Here is an overview of the incident.
Police swiftly responded to the Islamic center, housing a mosque and primary school, just before noon local time. Upon arrival, they discovered three adults had been fatally shot. Simultaneously, reports emerged of another shooting nearby.
Approximately 50 to 100 officers entered the Islamic center, conducting a thorough search of classrooms and prayer spaces. At the second location, both suspects were found deceased from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
The suspects, identified as males aged 17 and 18, are currently under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed their identities officially, nor confirmed whether they were San Diego residents or outsiders targeting the city. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl noted the presence of “hate speech” inscriptions on firearms and anti-Islamic messages in the suspects’ vehicle.
Responding to an active shooter alert around 11:43 am, law enforcement arrived at the mosque, recognized as the largest in San Diego county, situated approximately eight miles north of downtown. Three deceased men, including a heroic security guard instrumental in preventing further casualties, were found outside the mosque.
The security guard, identified as Amin Abdullah, was commended for his courageous actions that potentially saved lives. Witnesses described his selfless sacrifice during the tragic event.
Teachers, students, and staff within the mosque remained unharmed. Further incidents were prevented due to the security guard’s brave intervention. Subsequent to the shooting, the bodies of the suspects, who had ended their lives with self-inflicted gunshot wounds, were discovered in a vehicle nearby.
The suspects were later named as Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18. Clark, a virtual student at Madison High School, was set to graduate soon. He was an active wrestler with ties to the school.
In a tragic turn of events, one suspect’s mother had reported her son, along with firearms and a vehicle, missing, expressing concerns about his wellbeing. The suspects, dressed in camouflage attire, swiftly made their way to the mosque, as per witnesses and law enforcement statements.
Authorities found anti-Islamic writings in the suspects’ vehicle, hinting at potential motives for the deadly attack. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the incident will be classified as a hate crime.
