A cruise ship bound for the Canary Islands is heading there after three individuals passed away due to a viral outbreak. Among those evacuated for urgent medical care were a British crew member, Martin Anstree, a 41-year-old Dutch colleague, and a 65-year-old German. They were airlifted from the MV Hondius on Wednesday.
The outbreak is linked to hantavirus, originating from a birdwatching expedition in Argentina that has resulted in three fatalities. Dr. Meghan Martin, known as Beachgem10 on TikTok with 2.6 million followers, provided insights about the disease. She clarified that hantavirus typically does not spread through person-to-person contact, except for the Andes strain identified on the MV Hondius.
Symptoms of hantavirus include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain in the initial phase. Respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and chest tightness may follow. Dr. Martin highlighted the rarity of hantavirus, emphasizing the absence of a vaccine and the limited effectiveness of antibiotics due to its viral nature.
The UK Health Security Agency stated that hantavirus is a group of viruses carried by rodents like mice and rats, transmitted through their droppings and urine. The agency also outlined symptoms and transmission methods, mentioning that infections commonly occur in rural and agricultural settings.
The MV Hondius is en route to the Canary Islands, with plans for a charter flight to repatriate unaffected British citizens upon docking. Although no British individuals on board are currently symptomatic, they will be closely monitored and advised to isolate for 45 days upon return. Expedition guide Martin Anstee, who was evacuated for specialized medical care, mentioned undergoing tests in the Netherlands and being in stable condition. His wife expressed relief at his improved state after a challenging period of illness progression.
