“British Marathoner Freed from Tehran Raises Funds for Iranian Dogs”

Anoosheh Ashoori, a British businessman, endured imprisonment in Tehran concurrently with Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and was freed on the same day. He participated in the London marathon to raise funds for rescuing dogs in Iran. Ashoori, aged 72, expressed outrage at the mistreatment of dogs by the Iranian regime and pledged part of his fundraising to aiding these animals. His marathon completion time was 5 hours 57 minutes, generating £3,400 for the cause.

Detailing the dire situation faced by dogs in Iran, Ashoori highlighted instances of poisoning and shooting by authorities. He commended private dog shelters for their efforts in saving and rehabilitating these animals, emphasizing the need to relocate them outside Iran to prevent harm. Concerned about potential reprisals, he refrained from disclosing specific shelter names to shield them from government interference or extortion, recalling the distressing sounds of wounded dogs during his captivity.

Maintaining a strong bond with Zaghari-Ratcliffe post their shared trauma, Ashoori emphasized their mutual advocacy for reform in Iran. He recounted their recent participation in an anti-far-right protest in London, organized by Amnesty International. Postponing a scheduled shoulder operation to partake in the marathon, Ashoori underscored his commitment to raising awareness about the plight of both humans and animals oppressed by the Iranian regime.

Reflecting on his resilience during imprisonment, Ashoori underscored the importance of optimism and activism in effecting change. He urged citizens to leverage their influence by engaging with policymakers to pressure the government to classify the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist entity. Emphasizing the critical role of hope and perseverance in driving transformation, Ashoori shared his key lessons from his time in Iranian prison.

Ashoori and Zaghari-Ratcliffe regained their freedom on March 16, 2022, following a prolonged period of detention. Arrested by Iranian authorities in August 2017 while visiting his mother, Ashoori faced a 12-year prison sentence in 2019 on charges of espionage for Mossad and financial irregularities.
