A teacher at a primary school is accused of secretly recording students in the boys’ restroom using a hidden camera. Timothy Blamires, 33, made a virtual appearance at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court in south Melbourne and was denied bail due to concerns about potential evidence tampering. He was apprehended last week and faces charges of creating and having child exploitation material following the discovery of a camera at Kingswood Primary School in Dingley Village.
Allegedly, a janitor found a concealed camera inside an air freshener in the restroom, aimed at the urinals. The janitor secured the camera in a bag and left it on the principal’s desk. Blamires purportedly relocated the camera to a drawer in the school’s sick bay. Subsequently, the air freshener was reportedly found in his possession at the school post his arrest.
Law enforcement officials seized electronic devices like laptops, phones, and tablets from Blamires’ residence as part of their inquiry. It is claimed that footage retrieved from the camera showed Blamires setting up the device and capturing children using the restroom.
Magistrate Timothy Gattuso decided against granting bail to Blamires, citing an “unacceptable risk” of witness interference and evidence destruction. The magistrate also mentioned discrepancies in the passwords provided by Blamires to the police, deeming them inaccurate.
Although Blamires’ brother offered a AU$50,000 surety for his release and vowed to supervise him to prevent any breach of conditions, the prosecution contended that he posed a danger to the public and might attempt to destroy evidence. Refusing bail, Mr. Gattuso highlighted the allegation that Blamires attempted to conceal the camera after its discovery by the janitor.
A mother of one of the school’s students attended the court session and expressed the emotional turmoil she experienced. She described the difficulty of the situation and the necessity for her presence to process the distressing events.
