A drone reportedly targeted the External Radiation Control Laboratory at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The power plant, the largest in Europe, has been a subject of ongoing safety concerns since the conflict with Russia in 2022.
Control of the power plant shifted to Russian forces in March 2022 after intense fighting. The area surrounding the plant has experienced multiple missile strikes, with conflicting sides attributing blame to each other. The IAEA has been informed about the drone strike on the power plant’s laboratory.
While no injuries were reported, investigations are underway to determine the extent of the damage caused. Rafael Grossi, the director general of the IAEA, emphasized that any attack on the facility poses a risk to nuclear safety.
In a separate incident, a drone strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces last month resulted in the death of a driver at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, as reported by Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation. Rosatom expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the broader threats to both individuals and overall security posed by attacks on nuclear facilities.
Following the recent drone strike, the IAEA received information from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant confirming the death of a driver in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally, Rosatom issued a statement stating that an employee at the power plant had been killed in the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
