A man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 23 years for the murder of a beloved father of three. Brandon Byrne, 23, was carrying a kitchen knife in Newark town center when he fatally attacked James Cook, who was defenseless on the ground. The incident occurred following a pub brawl where Byrne had been involved in a physical altercation and was subsequently removed from the premises.
During the attack on April 30 last year, Byrne kicked the victim in the head after stabbing him in the neck and stomach. The judge, Steven Coupland, stated that the second stab wound was inflicted while Mr. Cook was defenseless. Byrne, dressed in a blue suit and red tie during his sentencing, showed no emotion as victim impact statements described him as a “monster” who had devastated an entire family.
Judge Coupland expressed his belief that Byrne had intended to kill Mr. Cook. He emphasized the tragic consequences of carrying a knife in public, highlighting Byrne’s lack of remorse and his decision to deny the offense before the trial. Despite mitigation attempts, including a plea that Byrne did not have the intention to kill, the judge emphasized the avoidable nature of the events leading to the fatal stabbing. The victim’s daughters expressed profound grief and anguish over the loss of their father, referring to Byrne as the “monster who stole my dad” and describing the pain as cutting deep like a knife. The judge acknowledged Byrne’s remorse over Mr. Cook’s death but noted that it was overshadowed by his choice to contest the charges and go to trial. Ultimately, Byrne was found guilty of murder on the first anniversary of the tragic incident.
