The recent 2026 London Marathon has broken its own fundraising record, organizers revealed. This year’s marathon has already raised over £87.5 million for various charities, surpassing the previous record of £87.3 million set at last year’s event. The final fundraising total is anticipated to exceed £90 million when announced in September.
Hugh Brasher, the chief executive of London Marathon Events, expressed delight in surpassing the 2025 world record of £87.3 million, thanking all fundraisers and donors. The marathon is recognized as the largest annual one-day fundraising event globally. Notably, this year’s race witnessed Sabastian Sawe becoming the first athlete to officially complete a 26.2-mile run in under two hours, establishing a new world record near Buckingham Palace.
Additionally, Ethiopian runner Tigst Assefa set a new women’s world record time of two hours, 15 minutes, and 41 seconds. The event also saw a record-breaking 59,830 participants completing the marathon, earning the Guinness World Record title. Hugh Brasher praised the day for its remarkable achievements in setting new records.
Plans are in motion for a potential two-day marathon event next year with an aim to raise over £130 million for charity and generate £400 million in social and economic benefits, as per Sheffield Hallam University researchers. Talks are progressing for this special event, allowing double the number of participants compared to this year.
Mr. Brasher emphasized the careful consideration and consultation required for the event’s success, including discussions with the BBC for extensive TV coverage. The National Autistic Society has been designated as the official charity for the 2027 London Marathon, with a focus on inclusivity and creating a positive impact through their campaign, “It’s Time To Show Up.”
