Essa Suleiman, the individual accused of attempting to murder two Jewish men in a knife attack in Golders Green, made an appearance in court today facing charges related to their attempted murders and an additional charge of trying to kill a friend. The accused, identified as Suleiman, aged 45, allegedly targeted Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, during the violent incident in the streets of the north London neighborhood.
In addition to the charges linked to the Golders Green attack, Suleiman stands accused of another attempted murder in a separate incident that occurred on the same day in south-east London. The court heard that Mr. Rand was assaulted outside his synagogue, while Mr. Shine was reportedly stabbed in the neck at a bus stop while adjusting his kippah.
During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Suleiman is alleged to have tried to murder a longtime acquaintance at his residence in Southwark just before the Golders Green assaults. The prosecution mentioned that Suleiman, armed with a knife, attempted to stab the man, who managed to defend himself from the attack.
Following this incident, Suleiman purportedly traveled to Brent Cross underground station before proceeding to Golders Green, where he allegedly attacked Mr. Rand outside a synagogue. The prosecutor detailed how Mr. Rand was stabbed in the chest and pursued by the defendant as he fled towards the synagogue, sustaining a punctured lung. Subsequently, Suleiman is accused of assaulting Mr. Shine at a later time on Golders Green Road.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring remanded Suleiman in custody after he faced the charges for the first time. Suleiman, a resident of Camberwell in south London, did not enter pleas to the three counts of attempted murder and one count of possessing a black handled knife in a public place. The defendant, dressed in a grey tracksuit, remained composed during the court proceedings.
Before the charges were brought, Scotland Yard had reported Suleiman to Prevent in 2020, the government’s anti-extremism initiative, but the case was closed the same year. Police officers used a Taser on the suspect following the double stabbing incident that left both victims hospitalized.
Mr. Rand, who has since been discharged from the hospital, described the event as miraculous and expressed gratitude for surviving the attack. Rabbi Levi Schapiro confirmed Mr. Rand’s recovery at home, having received stitches. Meanwhile, Mr. Shine, still in the hospital after being stabbed in the neck, is reported to be in stable condition.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the support being provided to the victims and urged against speculation regarding the case to ensure a fair legal process. The UK terrorism threat level was escalated to “severe” by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, signifying a high likelihood of a terrorist incident.
