Clubs in a popular Spanish holiday destination frequented by British tourists are adjusting their operating hours due to a decrease in visitors.
A key figure in Majorca’s hospitality industry has expressed concerns about the anticipated decline in revenues for bars, restaurants, and clubs on the sunny island compared to the previous year. Despite the influx of holidaymakers in the Balearic Islands, club attendance has been notably low, as reported by Miguel Pérez-Marsá, the president of the ABONE nightlife association.
With a challenging outlook for the summer season, businesses are striving to maintain competitive pricing to attract customers amidst expected higher costs for flights and accommodations. To manage expenses, establishments are reducing their opening hours, particularly during weekdays, to minimize staffing costs and focusing on weekends. The peak season is now limited to the period from June 20 to August 20.
This shift in the nightlife scene follows concerns raised since the lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Demonstrations in Majorca demanding government action on housing issues and tourist congestion have added pressure on the industry. The decline in German tourists, who traditionally make up a significant portion of visitors to Majorca, is also worrisome for hospitality workers. Anti-tourism sentiments and changing perceptions about destinations due to climate concerns have been cited as contributing factors affecting tourism trends.
Despite an overall increase in visitor numbers to the Balearic Islands, challenges persist in the tourism sector. Majorca’s hospitality industry is navigating through uncertainties to adapt to evolving consumer behaviors and external factors impacting travel patterns.
