Popular among tourists for years, the islands gained even more attention after being featured in the movie “The Beach.” However, the influx of visitors to Maya Bay, where the movie was filmed, has led to environmental degradation and overcrowding.
A recent video from Koh Phi Phi depicts a large crowd of sunseekers, highlighting the overwhelming number of tourists. Negative reactions on social media platforms like Reddit reflect the sentiment that the experience is no longer enjoyable due to the excessive crowds.
Efforts to address overtourism on Koh Phi Phi Leh, the smaller island with Maya Bay, have included restrictions such as timed entries, limited boat capacity, and bans on overnight stays and sunscreen in the water. Despite these measures, the issue persists, with overcrowding also affecting Koh Phi Phi Don.
Jub Yata, a destination manager at Intrepid Travel, emphasized the need for responsible tourism practices to avoid overwhelming popular destinations like Maya Bay. Intrepid Travel has been redirecting tourists to less crowded spots like Koh Thap, Koh Poda, and Koh Khai, offering a more sustainable travel experience.
Koh Thap, known for its stunning sea parting phenomenon, is a must-visit destination for island-hopping tours. Koh Poda offers tranquility and solitude, contrasting the bustling atmosphere found on Koh Khai in Phuket, which consists of three interconnected islands known for their scenic beauty and water activities.
