Legendary broadcaster Danny Kelly has shared that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer. At the age of 69, Kelly made the announcement during a talkSPORT show on Wednesday.
Having been a fixture at talkSPORT since 2007, the veteran presenter will be taking a break to undergo treatment in hopes of a full recovery. Kelly emphasized the importance of early detection, revealing that he initially visited the doctor with symptoms of acid reflux six weeks prior.
In a candid address to listeners, Kelly disclosed, “I need to be straightforward with you all, especially since most of our listeners are men who may find it challenging to discuss medical issues. I am currently unwell. What I thought was acid reflux turned out to be cancer.”
Specifically diagnosed with esophageal cancer, Kelly shared the concerning news but also mentioned a glimmer of hope as tests revealed the cancer had not spread internally. He outlined the upcoming rigorous treatment plan involving chemotherapy, surgery, and further medication.
Despite the tough road ahead, Kelly expressed gratitude towards talkSPORT for their support during this trying time and expressed his desire to return to broadcasting once he is able. Known for hosting the Trans-Europe Express on Sundays and featuring on Hawksbee and Jacobs during the week, Kelly commended the station for their understanding and flexibility.
Encouraging others to prioritize their health, Kelly urged, “If you sense something is off in your body, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes.”
As he prepares for the challenges ahead, Kelly thanked his audience for their support and well-wishes, expressing his optimism for a return to the airwaves in the future.
