“Unifor and GM Begin Talks for New Labor Deal”

Unifor and General Motors have initiated discussions for a new labor agreement, commencing negotiations at a central Toronto bargaining location on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members across various Ontario GM facilities, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.

During the commencement of talks, Unifor national president Lana Payne and Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, exchanged greetings. The negotiation room was set with chairs, with officials positioned on opposite sides, Payne seated in the center, and Uppal across from her.

In a press release on Monday, Payne expressed optimism for the negotiations, citing a strong foundation established by the pattern agreement with Ford and a commitment to discussing company operations and the future of auto jobs at GM in Canada. Unifor has set a target deadline of August 21 to secure a tentative agreement with GM.

Uppal, in a separate news release, emphasized the company’s respect for the collective bargaining process and the significant role of its employees in its achievements. He highlighted substantial investments made in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, aimed at securing future jobs and ensuring long-term competitiveness for GM Canada.

In a related development, Unifor members recently approved a new three-year contract with Ford, incorporating annual pay raises and program commitments across Ford facilities. The agreement also included a no-closure commitment and initiatives to support laid-off workers towards full employment by 2027.

The negotiations between Unifor and GM are part of an ongoing process involving the Detroit Three automakers, taking place amidst industry challenges such as trade uncertainties, tariffs, and the competitive landscape shaped by the introduction of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada.
