After a devastating car crash, investigators discovered troubling evidence hinting at foul play rather than a mere accident.
The vehicle, traveling at a staggering 100mph, collided with a brick building, resulting in the deaths of two passengers, Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan, while the 17-year-old driver, Mackenzie Shirilla, survived.
On the early morning of July 31, 2002, Shirilla was driving home from a party with Russo and Flanagan. Shortly after taking the wheel of her 2018 Toyota Camry, she crashed into the building with alarming force.
Prosecutors alleged during a 2023 trial that Shirilla deliberately caused the crash as part of a plan to harm Russo, despite her claim of no memory of the event.
Netflix recently released a true crime documentary called “The Crash,” delving into the tumultuous relationship dynamics leading up to the fatal incident.
Shirilla and Russo had a rocky relationship spanning four years, marked by an escalation of disputes and threats, according to Ohio Supreme Court records.
In the hours preceding the crash, the trio attended multiple parties, with witnesses noting a seemingly normal interaction between Shirilla and Russo.
Shirilla, under the influence of marijuana and possessing psilocybin mushrooms, inexplicably accelerated before crashing the car. Forensic evidence suggested she had pressed the accelerator with no braking just before impact.
The trial revealed Shirilla’s history of reckless driving and substance abuse, leading to her conviction on multiple charges, including murder and vehicular homicide.
Found guilty in August 2023, Shirilla received a 15-years-to-life sentence, which was upheld by the appeals court in March 2026, ensuring her continued imprisonment at the Ohio Reformatory for Women.
Scheduled for a parole hearing in September 2037, Shirilla remains behind bars, serving her sentence for the tragic events of 2022.
