Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek showed her emotions during a tense third-round match against Alexandra Eala. The defending title holder faced a tough challenge from her Filipino opponent, leading to a dramatic moment when Swiatek angrily tossed her racket into her bag.
Eala, who had previously defeated Maya Joint, the conqueror of Serena Williams, took a 4-2 lead in the tie-breaker when Swiatek’s outburst occurred. Despite Swiatek’s efforts to resist, Eala managed to secure the tie-break and the set.
Commentators Anne Keothavong and Jo Durie from the BBC were taken aback by Swiatek’s performance and the on-court incident involving the third-seeded player.
Keothavong remarked on Swiatek’s inconsistent play, stating that the unforced errors were surprising given Swiatek’s usual strong performance. Durie expressed shock at Swiatek’s three consecutive errors, highlighting her typically aggressive style and precision.
Following the racket incident, Keothavong noted that it had been a challenging afternoon for Swiatek, emphasizing the tough match she was experiencing.
Swiatek’s behavior mirrored that of another player at Wimbledon, Mirra Andreeva, who also expressed frustration by smashing her racket during a match against Barbora Krejcikova, drawing attention from BBC commentators on that occasion as well.
Swiatek had expressed confidence in facing Eala after her previous win over Karolina Pliskova but acknowledged the challenges posed by her opponent’s playing style on grass. She anticipated a tough match but vowed to be prepared for Eala’s unpredictable shots and varied rhythm.
