He explained that the hantavirus typically spreads through rodent droppings and urine but can also transfer directly between humans in specific circumstances. The initial infection on the ship resulted in the death of a Dutch woman in early April, and the virus has since had a month-long presence on the vessel.
Despite the concerning nature of the outbreak, Dr. Ahmed mentioned that the likelihood of it evolving into a global pandemic is minimal. He emphasized the importance of supporting the affected individuals and their families during this challenging time. The ship is set to head to the Canary Islands after evacuating passengers with suspected infections, although the local president has expressed opposition to this plan. Passengers are currently in isolation in their cabins while necessary disinfection and health protocols are implemented.
