“Migrant Crisis in Ceuta: 57 Lives Lost in Border Breach”

Authorities have characterized the recent events in Ceuta as a situation of extreme disorder, unsustainable, and a violation of regulations.

The breach of the Moroccan border into Spain’s Ceuta enclave, by tens of thousands of migrants through both land and sea routes, resulted in the tragic loss of at least 57 lives. This incident has caused profound shock and division within Europe.

On Thursday, it is estimated that around 60,000 individuals entered the Spanish enclave in North Africa, with approximately 48,300 individuals returning to Morocco by Friday evening. The migrants made their way by sea, with some swimming the five-kilometer distance from the Moroccan town of Fnideq, while others attempted a shorter crossing from the nearby town of Belyounech.

According to firsthand accounts, some of the migrants, including children and unaccompanied minors, risked their lives during the journey, prompting concerns from a Moroccan NGO about the safety of children on irregular migration paths.

Spain deployed troops to reinforce police after thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa. The scene was reminiscent of 2021, when about 10,000 migrants entered the territory.

Spanish authorities have recovered 57 bodies on the Spanish side of the border, with the possibility of additional casualties on the Moroccan side. The fatalities resulted from drowning and injuries sustained while attempting to scale the breakwater that supports the border fence.

One Moroccan individual, Abdelhakim, shared his harrowing experience of a 14-kilometer journey to the Morocco-Spain border, where he witnessed tragic deaths while attempting to cross by sea.

Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish territories on the northern African coast, experience periodic influxes of migrants seeking entry into Europe. These territories, being the only land borders of the European Union with Africa, have become focal points for migration attempts, although the scale of the recent surge was unprecedented.

Ceuta, an 18.5-square-kilometer peninsula with a population of approximately 83,000 individuals, witnessed a surge in population by 73% in a single day when 60,000 migrants crossed the border. The city, separated from mainland Spain by the Strait of Gibraltar, has a diverse population comprising Christians, Muslims, and residents
