Manitoba Leader Reluctant on American Liquor Return

Manitoba’s leader has expressed a reluctant willingness to consider reintroducing American liquor as part of a potential trade agreement, but with a notable caveat – he advises against purchasing it. Negotiations between Canadian and U.S. officials are ongoing to prevent new U.S. tariffs on nearly $30 billion worth of Canadian goods. During discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney and provincial leaders, Premier Kinew revealed that Carney had urged provinces to return American alcohol to store shelves, a proposal Manitoba has not yet accepted.

In the event that U.S. products are returned to Liquor Marts as part of a trade pact, Kinew emphasized that Canadian consumers still have the choice to opt for domestic options. He underscored this point during a news conference, urging citizens to refrain from buying American liquor to convey disapproval of President Donald Trump’s trade policies. Manitoba had initially removed millions of dollars worth of U.S.-made alcohol from shelves in 2025 in retaliation for U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods not compliant with the trade agreement with Mexico and the U.S.

Despite the possibility of American liquor reappearing in Manitoba, Kinew’s stance remains firm in advocating for Canadian products. Local preferences have driven a significant increase in sales at Liquor Marts, with Manitobans showing a preference for domestic choices, resulting in a substantial sales growth of nearly $21 million year-over-year. While some Prairie provinces have already reintroduced U.S. alcohol, Manitoba’s decision is pending.

Additionally, Carney has encouraged provincial leaders not to exclude the U.S. from their procurement policies. Manitoba has adhered to a preference for Canadian or non-American sources in its procurement policies since the initiation of the trade conflict, leading to a substantial decrease in spending on American firms. This policy shift has had a significant impact, prompting the Trump administration to seek a deal with Canada.

Opposition Leader Obby Khan criticized Kinew for purportedly not fully supporting local businesses, highlighting a multi-million dollar contract with an American-based company. Despite ongoing negotiations and pending details of the trade agreement, Kinew emphasized the importance of supporting workers, particularly in industries like the Gerdau steel mill. He criticized Trump’s trade approach as erratic and irresponsible, expressing skepticism about the longevity of any potential deal.

Kinew stressed the need for a better trade deal with the U.S., asserting that Canada holds a position of strength in negotiations. Despite potential agreements, he remains cautious and emphasizes the importance of collective national interests over personal satisfaction. The premier also hinted at the possibility of reinstating the ban on U.S. liquor if necessary.
