Former England cricket captain, Michael Vaughan, has voiced his support for Ben Stokes to retain the captaincy of the national team. However, Vaughan expressed reservations about Stokes’ recent conduct.
Stokes, amidst uncertainties surrounding his future, has found himself embroiled in a dispute with the England and Wales Cricket Board following his involvement in a nightclub incident alongside teammate Gus Atkinson and Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa.
Speculation arose that Stokes might announce a decision on social media that could involve stepping down as captain, but no such announcement materialized. The ECB faces the task of naming a squad for the upcoming Test, potentially needing to make a decision on the involvement of Stokes and Atkinson before the game.
As the Women’s T20 World Cup is set to commence in Edgbaston, there is a desire for clarity on Stokes’ situation ahead of the tournament. Vaughan, who led England to Ashes victory and captained the team on numerous occasions, believes that Stokes should not be dismissed as captain for breaching curfew.
While Vaughan sees a path for Stokes to recover, he also expressed concerns about the cricketer’s behavior, dating back to recent incidents including the ill-fated Ashes tour. Stokes and Atkinson are under investigation for violating team protocols by breaking curfew after a Test match victory.
Auvaa’s involvement in a physical altercation following the incident has added complexity to the situation, with Saracens also conducting an inquiry. Vaughan highlighted instances where Stokes exhibited questionable behavior, suggesting a short suspension rather than a permanent removal from captaincy as a more appropriate response.
