Global icons Madonna and Shakira have been announced as the headliners for the upcoming World Cup final halftime show, expected to captivate millions of fans worldwide. The lineup was unveiled by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in a creative social media video featuring beloved characters from Sesame Street, the Muppets, and the popular South Korean boy band BTS. The highly anticipated event is set to take place on July 19 at the renowned MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino, who shared event details on Instagram, disclosed plans for the show last year. With an estimated 7 million fans anticipated to attend in the United States, the global TV audience for the final is projected to surpass one billion viewers. This unprecedented halftime show may extend the typical 15-minute break during the final, building on the record-breaking reach of the 2022 Final between France and Argentina, which drew 1.42 billion viewers globally. The average live audience for the finals overall stood at 175 million viewers.
The upcoming halftime spectacle will serve as a platform to support the Fifa Global Citizen Education Fund, aiming to raise $100 million to enhance education and football access for children worldwide. Halftime entertainment has become a prominent aspect of sporting events in the United States, notably during the Super Bowl, where Madonna headlined in 2012 and Shakira shared the stage with Jennifer Lopez in 2020.
In a similar vein, Fifa staged a memorable halftime show last summer at the MetLife Stadium during the Club World Cup final, where Chelsea secured a 3-0 victory against Paris St Germain. The upcoming World Cup, featuring 48 teams, will kick off on June 11 and will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
