Employees at the Southgate Metro location expressed shock at the news, with Justin Braganza, a meat cutter with over 30 years of experience, describing the announcement as unexpected. The closure was attributed to financial pressures, including increased rent and concerns about the store’s profitability.
Despite the company’s explanation that the change was driven by market conditions, some employees and customers expressed disappointment and concern. The workers were informed that they do not have the option to transfer to other Metro stores, but they can apply for positions at the new Food Basics store. However, the transition may not be seamless for all employees due to differences in job roles and wage structures between the two banners.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected members, including job opportunities at the new store and improved severance benefits.
