Three individuals have lost their lives aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, and a British citizen is in critical condition after a hantavirus case was confirmed on the vessel. Hantavirus infections are typically associated with environmental exposure to infected rodents’ urine or feces. Person-to-person transmission of the virus is rare. The World Health Organization (WHO) has verified six suspected cases on the MV Hondius, which was traveling from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde, Africa. A 70-year-old Dutch man and his 69-year-old wife succumbed to the disease. Meanwhile, a 69-year-old British man is receiving intensive care treatment in Johannesburg. Passengers on the cruise remain stranded as they await permission to disembark.
