Green Leader Zack Polanski Stands by Concerns on Police Response

Zack Polanski expresses ongoing concerns regarding the police handling of an antisemitic terror incident in north London, despite facing criticism. The Green leader recently issued an apology following backlash over a social media post alleging excessive force by arresting officers on a mentally ill individual. Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley cautioned against such accusations, labeling them potentially detrimental and criticizing “armchair experts.”

While acknowledging that his post was not suitable for social media, Polanski maintained his apprehensions about the police response to the Golders Green attack. In an interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, he emphasized his continued worry but acknowledged the inappropriate platform for his initial expression. Polanski also hinted at addressing the issue in a private meeting with the commissioner.

As a member of the London assembly overseeing the Met Police, Polanski emphasized the importance of accountability in public service, stating that scrutiny should apply to all, even those displaying bravery. Additionally, he opposed crackdowns on pro-Palestine protests in response to antisemitism, cautioning against certain phrases while advocating for the defense of protest rights.

The Prime Minister’s call for responsible protest behavior follows Polanski’s comments, with a focus on avoiding contentious language during demonstrations. Labour’s Communities Secretary, Steve Reed, criticized Polanski for questioning the police response, labeling his actions as unfit for a political leader. Similarly, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander condemned Polanski’s initial social media post, praising the courage and professionalism of the responding officers.

In a related development, Keir Starmer suggested potential restrictions on certain protests and stricter monitoring of protest language, while Kemi Badenoch proposed a temporary halt to pro-Palestine marches. The UK’s threat level was raised to severe following the Golders Green attack, prompting an investigation into the impact of protests on societal cohesion and safety.
