Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018, aiming to establish roots in the city. Initially drawn by the allure of Vancouver’s scenic beauty and the presence of family, Moony’s expectations were high. However, as time passed, she encountered challenges, including a lack of professional networks and the elusive “Canadian experience” sought by employers.
Struggling with feelings of isolation and discontent, Moony found herself yearning for the sense of community she had experienced in previous locations. Despite appreciating Vancouver’s natural charm and unique features, such as the towering mountains and the Pacific Spirit Park, she felt disconnected and disheartened by the city’s perceived shortcomings.
The difficulties of adjusting to a new environment, coupled with the onset of the pandemic, intensified Moony’s longing for a more vibrant and bustling urban setting. Eventually, she made the decision to return to London, seeking the familiar chaos and energy of the city where she had previously resided.
However, upon her return to London, Moony realized that her time in Vancouver had instilled in her a sense of quiet introspection and a newfound appreciation for the West Coast lifestyle. Despite the initial challenges and the allure of a bustling metropolis, she found herself missing the simpler, more tranquil essence of Vancouver.
Reflecting on her experiences, Moony acknowledges that Vancouver, like any city, has its flaws and imperfections. Yet, she now sees the city in a different light, recognizing the mutual understanding and respect that has developed between them. With a newfound sense of acceptance and a desire to reconnect with the city, Moony returns to Vancouver, seeking to rediscover the beauty and potential for connection that she once overlooked.
