Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw announced on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming television series based on the Harry Potter franchise, citing her objection to supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot on Instagram where she adamantly rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO Harry Potter series, emphasizing her stance against funding transphobic content.
Expressing her firm stance, Pankiw stated, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” She clarified that the offer was for a directing role, not acting. Pankiw, aged 39, has an impressive portfolio, having directed episodes for the science fiction series Black Mirror, the comedy show Feel Good, and the film I Used to be Funny.
The series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled for release on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, with streaming available on Crave in Canada. Based on J.K. Rowling’s renowned Harry Potter book series, the show has stirred controversy due to the author’s contentious views on transgender issues.
In a recent social media post, Rowling reiterated her stance that “Trans women aren’t women,” sparking further debate. The author has faced criticism for her opinions, leading to backlash from various quarters, including actors from the Harry Potter films. Notably, Canadian franchise Tim Hortons faced backlash for its Harry Potter collaboration, underscoring the ongoing controversy surrounding the franchise.
Additionally, director Kate Herron echoed Pankiw’s sentiments, revealing that she also declined offers to work on the Harry Potter series. Herron, known for her work on the Marvel Studios series Loki, affirmed her decision to reject involvement with the show.
While inquiries to HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, regarding the refusals have not yet been answered, Pankiw’s representative has not responded to requests for further details on the text exchange. The industry continues to grapple with the intersection of creative opportunities and ethical considerations in light of such contentious issues.
