eBay has introduced a significant alteration affecting individuals engaged in trading card transactions.
The online platform is rolling out its Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK. This means that upon the purchase of a qualifying trading card, the seller must send the card to eBay’s authentication facility for a physical inspection conducted by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA).
Following the evaluation, the card will be shipped to the buyer with an e-tag containing a unique QR code attached to the card’s protective packaging. Buyers can scan this code to access information about the card and its authentication.
The authentication service will initially be available for eligible trading cards, including collectible card games, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards, priced at £500 and above.
By June, eligibility will extend to all trading cards valued at £500 or more. The Authenticity Guarantee service is already operational for other categories like trainers, luxury watches, and handbags, without any additional cost to buyers.
eBay remarked that trading cards, particularly popular brands such as Pokémon and Formula 1, are witnessing robust demand. Cards like Charizard ex and Ancient Mew were among the most sought-after in 2025, with Lando Norris ranking as the top-searched British athlete on the platform.
A rare 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare #4 BGS 9 MINT card fetched the highest value in the UK at £16,500.
Adam Ireland, eBay’s Vice President and General Manager of Global Collectables, emphasized the importance of trust in the collectibles industry. He highlighted eBay’s three decades of experience, innovation, and diverse selection, stating that the expansion of the Authenticity Guarantee service to trading cards in the UK will enhance the transaction experience for high-value cards, marking a significant milestone for their collectibles business.
Earlier this year, eBay struck a $1.2 billion (£890 million) deal to acquire the second-hand clothing app Depop from rival Etsy. This move is intended to appeal to a younger demographic as eBay aims for sustained growth.
The transaction is slated to conclude in the second quarter of the year, with Depop retaining its brand, platform, and culture. Both companies expressed excitement about the future collaboration, emphasizing the unique attributes each brings to the partnership and the potential benefits for buyers and sellers.
