“Driving Instructor Sparks Debate on Correct Steering Techniques”

A driving instructor has brought attention to a common error made by drivers on a daily basis, sparking a lively discussion among motorists. In a video shared online, the instructor, identified as @cleanstartdriving, challenged viewers to recognize the correct steering technique aligning with the UK driving test.

The instructor demonstrated four distinct methods – ‘crossing hands’, ‘palming’, ‘sliding through’, and ‘pull push’ – and asked followers to identify the method that would pass the test. The video quickly gained traction, with many drivers believing only specific techniques were deemed acceptable.

One individual remarked, “I’m pretty sure crossing hands is not allowed.” Another shared, “My instructor informed me that as long as I maintain control of the vehicle, I could steer with my nose – and yes, I passed on my first attempt, although I didn’t actually use my nose.”

A third user mentioned, “My instructor stated that sliding through would result in a failure.” On the other hand, someone claimed, “I passed my test using only one hand, and the examiner mentioned he had never seen a new driver control a car that well with just one hand.”

Nevertheless, the instructor later clarified that all four methods could be considered acceptable as long as the driver maintains complete control of the steering wheel throughout.

This aligns with the Highway Code, which emphasizes the importance of drivers keeping both hands on the steering wheel or handlebars whenever possible. The Code also allows for the use of driver assistance systems in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

In a separate instance, another instructor pointed out a common mistake made by drivers when turning right at junctions, which often leads to traffic congestion. In a TikTok video, the company @roosterinsurance questioned viewers on the correct positioning of a car while waiting to make a right turn.

They explained, “This is a common error during driving tests. When preparing to turn right into a road, positioning your car too far to the left while waiting for oncoming traffic to clear can cause delays for the traffic in your lane.”

Instead, drivers should position their vehicle slightly left of the center line, if space permits, allowing other vehicles to pass on the left while waiting for a safe opportunity to turn. Despite being fundamental driving knowledge, many drivers still make this mistake, leading to unnecessary congestion and frustration for fellow road users.
