Five high-ranking Iranian officials are set to be sanctioned for their involvement in activities within the Strait of Hormuz that disrupt international peace, as announced by Canada’s foreign affairs minister. The sanctions are aimed at individuals whose actions threaten global trade and energy security by impeding the freedom of navigation in the crucial waterway, stated Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand in a release on Friday. The sanctions target senior figures of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for their actions that have posed risks to a vital international water passage, according to a statement from Global Affairs Canada. The officials sanctioned include Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini.
This move brings the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by Canada related to Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors to 232 individuals and 260 entities, as indicated by Global Affairs Canada. The sanctions come amidst mounting pressure to resolve the conflict in the region, as efforts to reach a peace deal involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran remain elusive.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in February, characterized by a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, President Donald Trump has vacillated between threats of escalation and claims of nearing a peace agreement. Iran has sought to leverage control of the strait as a means to influence Washington, leading to disruptions in the transit of oil and liquefied natural gas. Trump has appealed to allies to safeguard the critical oil shipping route, while Canada and other nations have called for the strait to remain open for commercial shipping.
As tensions persist, the U.S. has indicated its readiness to maintain a naval presence in the region to enforce its blockade on Iran. Trump faces mounting pressure to end the conflict, given the impact on fuel prices and the global economy, with the International Energy Agency forecasting a significant decline in global oil supply.
