“Calgary Flames Mourn Iconic Voice Peter Maher”

The Calgary Flames community is mourning the loss of Peter Maher, the iconic voice behind the team’s radio broadcasts for over three decades. Maher, who passed away at the age of 79, began his tenure as the Flames’ play-by-play announcer in 1980 and called games for 33 consecutive seasons until his retirement in 2014. Known for his signature catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” Maher’s passion and dedication endeared him to Flames fans and players alike.

The Flames paid tribute to Maher, acknowledging his significant impact on the team and the community. Described as a passionate ambassador for the Flames, Maher’s warm personality and love for the game left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher made a name for himself calling Toronto Maple Leafs games before joining the Flames in Calgary.

Rob Kerr, Maher’s longtime colleague, expressed his sorrow at the news of Maher’s passing, highlighting Maher’s storytelling prowess and commitment to delivering authentic and journalistic-based broadcasts. Kerr recalled Maher’s memorable calls, such as the iconic “Yeah, baby!” moment during the Flames’ 2004 playoff run. Maher’s broadcasting legacy extended beyond the Flames, as he also covered NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Recognized for his outstanding contributions to hockey broadcasting, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 and received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. Following his retirement, Maher’s legacy was further honored with the naming of the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome in his honor. Additionally, an annual award bearing his name is presented to the Flames player who exemplifies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.

Calgary Flames games have found a new radio home with Corus Entertainment, continuing Maher’s legacy of bringing the team’s action to fans near and far. Maher’s impact on the Flames and the broader hockey community will be remembered for years to come as a testament to his unparalleled broadcasting talent and passion for the game.
