A beluga whale that was relocated from Marineland park in Niagara Falls, Ont., has passed away in Spain. Jelly Bean, who arrived at Oceanogrà fic de València less than a month ago along with another beluga named Cleopatra and four dolphins, died suddenly overnight. Despite experiencing feeding difficulties, Jelly Bean initially showed signs of improvement under intensive monitoring before her unexpected death.
OceanogrĂ fic de València stated that a necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of Jelly Bean’s death. Meanwhile, Cleopatra and the four dolphins are reported to be in good health at the aquarium.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed sadness over Jelly Bean’s demise and praised the efforts taken by the Canadian government to ensure the safe rescue of the whales. Two other belugas, Peekachu and Rain, had also died shortly after being relocated to different facilities.
Animal Justice highlighted the stress associated with transporting the belugas and warned about the potential health risks. The organization had been advocating for independent health assessments of the belugas prior to their transfers.
Marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose raised concerns about the well-being of the belugas during the relocation process, emphasizing the stress and potential dangers involved. She had suggested keeping the animals at Marineland temporarily until a suitable whale sanctuary was established in Nova Scotia.
Despite the challenges and losses, OceanogrĂ fic de València acknowledged the individual needs of each rescued animal and expressed sorrow over Jelly Bean’s passing.
