“American Climber Found Dead in Broad Peak Avalanche”

A 10-member international mountaineering team that was struck by an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago has finally located the remains of American climber Mallory Geis, the last missing member. The discovery was made by a group of local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Geis, 39, who resided in San Antonio, Texas, was embarking on her first endeavor to conquer an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Earlier this year, Geis had announced on social media her decision to close her Pilates studio and venture into uncharted territories, expressing her anticipation of encountering numerous climbing gear such as helmets, harnesses, and crampons. Described by her family as a radiant presence cherished by her loved ones, Geis’s tragic demise concludes a search operation initiated on July 31 following the fatal avalanche that engulfed the mountaineering team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja.

Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier of Nepali origin, made headlines in 2019 by scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks within a remarkable 189 days, a feat documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Despite breaking his own record in 2023, accidents remain a prevalent risk on mountaineering expeditions in the northern regions of Pakistan due to factors such as avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitudes, and volatile weather conditions.
