Kevin Murison, a bagpiper in Ottawa, receives a variety of reactions while playing on one of the city’s busiest sidewalks during weekends, with most being positive. Despite some individuals covering their ears as they pass by, Murison receives numerous compliments on his playing and attire, particularly when he performs in full Highland dress near the Château Laurier overlooking the Ottawa Locks.
An incident on a Saturday afternoon left Murison with a 15-centimeter gash in his bagpipe bag and four stitches in his thumb. He recounted that a man approached him under the guise of taking a photo but then brandished a knife, resulting in a blur of events that culminated in Murison discovering his hand covered in blood after the assailant departed.
Following the attack, a bystander called 911, leading to a swift police response that saw Murison receiving immediate medical attention and the apprehension of a 25-year-old suspect nearby. The individual faces multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and probation breaches, with ongoing custody status.
Expressing his lifelong love for bagpipes, Murison, a member of Ottawa Caledonian Pipes and Drums, speculated on the motive behind the attack, suggesting that the instrument may have been the primary target. Despite the setback, he has received overwhelming support from his band and the wider bagpiping community.
While Murison is currently recovering from his injuries, including a new bag provided by his bandmates, he remains resolute in his passion for playing the bagpipes and intends to return to busking once he has fully healed, undeterred by the traumatic incident.
