Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson’s nickname originated from his childhood days in Little League, where his lack of speed around the bases earned him the moniker. Fast forward to present day, Tugboat is preparing for his MLB pitching debut with the San Francisco Giants after being called up from the triple-A farm team. The Giants have announced him as the starting pitcher for their upcoming game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Jeff Duda, Wilkinson’s former coach, received the exciting news directly from the player himself in a late-night phone call, where Wilkinson shared his elation about the call-up. Despite not fitting the typical mold of a major league pitcher at 6-1 and 250 pounds, Wilkinson’s determination and competitive spirit have always set him apart.
Wilkinson’s baseball journey saw early success when he led White Rock to the Canadian Little League title at the age of 12 and later made a significant impact in international competitions, notably at the Little League World Series in 2015 and the World Baseball Classic earlier this year. His performance on the field has been impressive, with 96 strikeouts in 90 innings and a 3.40 ERA in 20 minor league starts this season.
Having been drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2023 and subsequently traded to the Giants, Wilkinson will face his former team in his MLB debut. Fans back in Canada are eagerly anticipating his Major League debut, recognizing his talent and determination that have propelled him to this pinnacle in his career.
