Iran’s foreign minister has dismissed recent threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced intentions to initiate the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN” against Iran. Abbas Araghchi, in a statement on X, labeled Trump’s proposed “Economic D-Day” as a diversion from America’s internal crisis of escalating debt and interest costs. Araghchi emphasized that persisting with failed policies would lead to further defeat and resentment from Iranians, warning that U.S. economic terrorism poses a global threat to economies and sovereignty.
Following Trump’s declaration of planning an unprecedented scale of “Economic Warfare and Isolation” against Iran due to the failure to secure a lasting peace deal, the Iranian official responded with disdain towards the U.S. president’s rhetoric. Trump’s Truth Social post also cautioned nations against offering any support to Iran, highlighting the potential “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” for those providing assistance. Despite not specifying countries or detailing specific actions, Trump urged U.S. allies to unite in isolating and defeating the perceived Iran threat.
China, a significant buyer of Iran’s oil, faces potential economic repercussions if the U.S. escalates economic hostilities with Iran. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a press briefing, stressed that sanctions and pressure tactics were not solutions, urging responsible actions and adherence to diplomatic approaches among involved parties.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted at prioritizing economic measures over major military actions against Tehran, leading to a surge in oil prices in response to the U.S. threats of financial penalties aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict. The heightened tensions prompted concerns about potential military escalations, with experts warning of the risks associated with Trump’s aggressive stance towards Iran.
Iran has endured prolonged economic sanctions, exacerbated by the Trump administration’s measures since the conflict’s inception. Despite thousands of casualties and stalled negotiations for a peace agreement, the recent expiry of a 60-day negotiating period without an extension signals continued deadlock between the two nations. Trump hinted at potential resumption of talks in the future, indicating a possibility for renewed diplomatic engagement.
