Elliot Page Reveals Lack of Casting Offers Post-“The Odyssey”

In the wake of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the classic story “The Odyssey,” Elliot Page’s performance garnered significant praise from both critics and enthusiasts alike. However, Page revealed that despite the film’s success, he has not been inundated with casting offers. The Canadian actor shared this insight during an interview on the podcast “On Film… With Kevin McCarthy.”

Responding to host Kevin McCarthy’s assumption that he must be receiving numerous offers post the movie, Page retorted, “No, Kevin, I’m not.” Page, a native of Halifax, gained acclaim for his portrayal of the Greek soldier Sinon in “The Odyssey,” a character who meets an early demise in Odysseus’s narrative but returns to deliver a poignant monologue from the afterlife.

Reflecting on the aftermath of his performance, Page humorously remarked to McCarthy about facing some scrutiny for his Canadian roots, subtly alluding to the transphobic backlash from certain conservative figures when rumors circulated that he was cast as Achilles in the film.

The controversy surrounding Page’s casting was stoked by right-wing commentators such as Ben Shapiro, Megyn Kelly, and Elon Musk, who incited social media frenzy over the idea of a transgender man playing the role of Achilles. This uproar was later debunked by 2SLGBTQ+ advocates as baseless, especially when it was revealed that Page was portraying a different character.

Page, a seasoned actor with a career spanning since childhood, is recognized for his acclaimed roles in films like “Juno,” “Inception,” and “Hard Candy.” In 2020, he publicly came out as transgender, using his platform to speak out against anti-2SLGBTQ+ sentiments and discriminatory legislation in both the U.S. and Canada.

Expressing his commitment to his craft, Page emphasized in the podcast that he is eager to explore more diverse roles. He noted that the comfort he now feels post-transition has boosted his confidence in his acting abilities, suggesting that he may deliver some of his best performances moving forward.

Furthermore, Page reminisced about his experience working with Nolan on “Inception,” where he portrayed a female character, highlighting the personal discomfort he faced despite enjoying the role. He remarked on a poignant moment of closure he felt upon completing his role in “The Odyssey,” symbolizing a full circle in his career.

Page’s situation post-“The Odyssey” is not unique, as co-star Samantha Morton, who portrayed Circe in the film, also shared during an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that she has experienced a lull in offers since the movie’s release. Morton acknowledged the changing dynamics of the industry, noting that while she believes in her talent, the competitive landscape and industry politics have evolved significantly.

Both Page and Morton’s experiences shed light on the challenges and uncertainties actors face post-success in the ever-evolving entertainment industry.
