An outburst of applause filled Canada Life Centre on Saturday night when local hero Simon Hildebrandt made a historic three-point shot. The Winnipeg Sea Bears clinched their inaugural Canadian Elite Basketball League championship with a 98-84 victory, triggering a shower of confetti and the anthem “We Are the Champions.”
Reflecting on the moment, Hildebrandt described it as unexpected and surreal, with emotions fading away as celebrations began. This triumph marked Winnipeg’s fourth season in the CEBL, with Chad Posthumus, a fellow Winnipegger, scoring the first game-winning basket in 2023.
Acknowledging Posthumus’s legacy, Hildebrandt expressed gratitude for being compared to him and honored to secure the final victory. The Sea Bears’ head coach, Mike Raimbault, shared a heartfelt moment with Posthumus’s parents during the postgame festivities, emphasizing the significance of Hildebrandt’s pivotal shot.
Following a challenging season that saw key players depart, including Teddy Allen due to an assault incident, the Sea Bears rallied together. Xavier Moon, who led the team with 29 points in the finals, was named the CEBL’s MVP. Despite setbacks and lineup changes, Winnipeg overcame obstacles to claim the ultimate prize.
The championship game witnessed a remarkable turnout of 12,519 fans at Canada Life Centre, setting a new attendance record for the CEBL. Sea Bears’ chairman, David Asper, credited the community’s support for the team’s success and highlighted the impact of the victory on aspiring basketball players in Winnipeg.
