In the depths of the jungle, a newly discovered non-venomous groundsnake from New Guinea has been christened Lielaphis slashi by scientists at the Field Museum in Chicago, paying homage to the famed Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash. This reddish-brown serpent, measuring around 71 centimeters, is now formally recognized as Slash’s groundsnake.
The naming of this species holds personal significance for Slash, who has been hailed by the Field Museum as a “lifelong reptile enthusiast and a staunch advocate for zoos and museums.” His affinity for snakes has been evident in both his public persona and musical endeavors, such as the formation of the rock group Slash’s Snakepit in 1994, featuring members from Guns N’ Roses, Alice in Chains, and Jellyfish.
Expressing his gratitude, Slash remarked, “I am extremely honored and humbled to have Lielaphis slashi from New Guinea named after me. It is really exciting. I never would have imagined this moment would arrive.”
The Field Museum’s associate curator of herpetology, Sara Ruane, shared her early passion for reptiles and her inspiration drawn from Slash’s documented love for snakes. Ruane’s journey into herpetology began at a young age, with her ambition solidified after seeing Slash on the cover of Reptiles Magazine holding his pet reticulated python.
Slash’s groundsnake was initially encountered in 2006 during fieldwork in New Guinea by Chris Austin, a herpetology professor at Louisiana State University’s Museum of Natural Science. The island, known for its rich biodiversity, remains a challenging environment for scientific exploration due to the presence of venomous snakes and the elusive nature of these reptiles.
Despite its unassuming appearance, genetic analysis revealed that Lielaphis slashi belongs to a distinct species within its genus.
