Sibling Caregiver in Toronto Balances Neurodivergent Needs

Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, shared her experience of losing her mother and taking on the role of her big brother’s primary caregiver this summer. Juggling caregiving duties while fostering a harmonious living arrangement for two middle-aged, neurodivergent siblings has its complexities.

Abrahamsohn’s brother, Stuart, is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requiring assistance with daily tasks like feeding, transfers, grooming, and emotional support due to rapid mood changes and sensitivity to loud noises. Reflecting on their childhood, Abrahamsohn recalled feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s behaviors and struggling to understand his experiences, often masking her own ADHD traits to fit societal norms.

Despite their differences, Abrahamsohn and Stuart have found ways to coexist peacefully. She has learned to minimize her ADHD tendencies to avoid triggering her brother’s outbursts, emphasizing the importance of communication and mutual respect in their shared living space. While sacrifices have been made, such as giving up acting classes to prioritize her brother’s care, Abrahamsohn cherishes the opportunity to strengthen their bond and create a supportive environment for both siblings.

By actively involving Stuart in decision-making and acknowledging his agency, Abrahamsohn aims to rewrite their narrative, fostering a deeper connection and understanding between them. Through adjustments, outside support, and a positive mindset, she is committed to making their unconventional living arrangement work, embracing this second chance to be a better sibling to Stuart.
