During a casual gathering at our church after Sunday service, a fellow parishioner remarked on the striking resemblance between Lily and her grandmother figure, Debbie. This observation was not uncommon, as both shared similar features like light wavy hair and infectious smiles that brighten any room. Despite not being biologically related, the bond between Lily and “nana” Debbie was unmistakable. Grandparents often possess a unique understanding of children, and Debbie had become Lily’s cherished caregiver, akin to an adopted grandparent.
Debbie entered our lives a few years after my spouse and I relocated to Ottawa for my job in the federal public sector. Lily was born in June 2017 after a challenging journey to parenthood that included multiple miscarriages. Our joy at becoming parents was short-lived when Lily was diagnosed with a brain tumor just four months after her birth. The subsequent months were a harrowing battle against the disease, with Lily and I spending extensive time in the oncology unit.
Despite initial reservations about accepting help, I found solace in Debbie’s unwavering support. As Lily underwent treatments in various children’s hospitals, Debbie emerged as her pillar of strength. Lily’s medical challenges, including a stroke, vision loss, and seizures, required intensive care, and Debbie’s presence became indispensable. Lily’s connection with Debbie transcended mere assistance; she found comfort and security in her presence, especially during medical procedures.
Now six years old, Lily has shown remarkable resilience, undergoing a life-changing surgery that alleviated her seizures. Despite her health struggles, she thrives in school, learning and growing with unwavering support from both her immediate family and her dedicated nana, Debbie.
The journey of caregiving for a child with complex medical needs took its toll on me, prompting the need for professional help and a strong support system. Debbie’s commitment to Lily’s well-being, coupled with the arrival of our second child, Grace, brought renewed hope and happiness to our family. Witnessing the bond between Lily, Grace, and Debbie has been a source of healing and strength, reminding us of the beauty that emerged from adversity.
