Fighter jets were dispatched over Washington DC today, causing residents to hear a loud ‘sonic boom’. The F-16 aircraft were mobilized to intercept a civilian plane that breached restricted airspace around 11.15am.
As the jets escorted the unauthorized plane out of the restricted zone above the US capital, residents experienced the sonic boom. Washington DC is safeguarded by a tightly controlled airspace zone known as the Special Flight Rules Area. Pilots are required to adhere to strict protocols and maintain continuous communication with air traffic control to prevent unauthorized entries within the 30-nautical-mile radius.
The US air force confirmed that fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a “general aviation aircraft” that violated restricted airspace and safely guided it away from the area. Additionally, pilots were reminded to remain vigilant and stay informed about restricted zones, including those around Washington DC and Mar-a-Lago in Florida, where Donald Trump resides.
The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) reported the successful interception of the unauthorized aircraft over the United States National Capital Region by NORAD F-16 fighter jets, ensuring the area’s security. NORAD emphasized the importance for pilots to check all FAA Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) to stay updated on restricted areas.
NORAD operates a comprehensive defense network utilizing radars, satellites, and fighter aircraft to detect and respond to potential threats. The monitoring and identification of civilian aircraft showcase NORAD’s commitment to executing aerospace warning and control missions for the United States and Canada.
The cautionary message to pilots was prompted by the recurring incidents of aircraft straying into restricted areas, with several instances of planes entering prohibited airspace near locations where Trump has been present. In a notable event last September, six unauthorized planes breached restricted airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey, during one weekend while Trump was at his golf course. NORAD promptly responded by deploying jets to intercept and redirect the aircraft, ensuring the security of the area.
