“Anti-Tourism Protests Threaten Balearic Islands”

Britons planning a trip to the Balearic Islands this summer should be aware of potential anti-tourism demonstrations scheduled in Majorca and Menorca. In Majorca, activists are threatening to disrupt key areas on July 26 to protest against mass tourism, while marches are set to occur in Menorca on June 13.

Over 50 organizations in these popular vacation spots have united to challenge and potentially “shut down” Palma, the capital of Mallorca. The protests are organized by “Menys turisme, mes vida” (“Less tourism, more life”), a group that previously led large-scale demonstrations in 2024. They anticipate even larger rallies this year, urging local residents to participate in support.

The main demonstrations in Majorca are expected near Palma’s cathedral, a hotspot for cruise tourists. David Comas, a spokesperson for the group, cautioned that the Balearic Islands are facing a critical and intricate summer ahead. He highlighted concerns about the total solar eclipse on August 12, which is likely to attract a surge of visitors, potentially overwhelming the island.

The protests aim to address not only the sheer number of tourists but also the adverse effects on the local population’s quality of life. Menys Turisme, més vida emphasizes the struggles faced by thousands of workers in terms of housing, stating that the island has been transformed into a “theme park” where residents’ rights to live comfortably are compromised.

In addition to the Balearic Islands, there have been recent reports from Lanzarote about actions taken against mass tourism. Instances include sealing Airbnb key boxes and limiting access to popular tourist sites. Protesters have used tactics like gluing key boxes shut and posting warning notices to discourage tourists from certain areas, with slogans like “Tourists go home” appearing in graffiti across the island.

In the Canary Islands back in 2024, similar protests erupted in areas like Tenerife, focusing on the detrimental impacts of mass tourism on local communities. Calls for authorities to implement measures such as visitor limits or tourism taxes have been persistent. Locals have voiced concerns about being displaced from their homes due to the tourism rental market, urging stricter regulations to address housing issues exacerbated by tourism demand.

The ongoing demonstrations reflect a broader sentiment against the negative repercussions of mass tourism on the islands’ infrastructure and residents’ well-being.
