US President Donald Trump has expressed worry about the Ebola outbreak as the United States enforces a travel restriction on visitors from several impacted nations due to a surge in the highly contagious virus.
When asked by a journalist about his apprehensions regarding the virus, Trump replied, “I certainly am concerned. I believe that it is currently contained in Africa, but it has shown signs of spreading.”
American citizens who have recently visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan will be prohibited from entering the United States. This prohibition, lasting at least 30 days, was mandated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Monday.
Ebola, a disease easily transmitted through bodily fluids, often results in fatal haemorrhagic fever, rapid organ failure, and internal or external bleeding.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 100 fatalities and nearly 400 suspected cases have been reported since the outbreak was declared on Saturday. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the epidemic a global health emergency after two cases were confirmed in neighboring Uganda, describing the situation as “extraordinary.”
According to The Telegraph, the US travel restriction violates the International Health Regulations (IHR), a set of rules established by the WHO. Following its withdrawal from the WHO in January, the United States has announced it will no longer abide by these regulations.
Under the IHR, countries are prohibited from implementing health measures that significantly disrupt international travel, such as visa limitations, border closures, or flight suspensions, without scientific justification.
Reports indicate that at least six Americans have been exposed to Ebola. Health authorities are considering evacuating them to quarantine at a US military base in Germany, potentially the US Army’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre (LRMC), which was utilized during a previous Ebola outbreak.
This development follows President Donald Trump’s recent threat to close military bases in Germany.
A US missionary doctor is the first confirmed Ebola case in the United States after exposure in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The doctor is being transferred to Germany for treatment.
A second US patient is showing symptoms of the deadly haemorrhagic fever, and three others have had close contact with infected individuals.
The CDC has confirmed its collaboration with US officials to safely evacuate a small group of affected Americans from the outbreak area.
The current outbreak is attributed to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or established treatment.
An official clarified that there are currently no Ebola cases in the United States following Trump’s remarks, emphasizing the need to maintain that status.
