“British Tourists Face Crackdown on Drinking in Spain’s Balearic Islands”

British tourists planning trips to Spain’s Balearic Islands this summer may run into trouble with the country’s new drinking regulations, as authorities crack down on unruly behavior and excessive partying. Last year, over 3.5 million Brits visited Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera seeking sun and affordable alcohol, but a rise in disruptive conduct has sparked anti-tourism protests.

In response, Spanish officials have implemented stricter rules, particularly in popular spots like Magaluf and San Antonio. The 2024 ‘Decree for Responsible Tourism’ now prohibits street drinking, with fines ranging from €500 to €3,000 for violators. Simon Hood of John Mason International warns travelers to avoid public drinking and loud behavior to avoid penalties, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach from local authorities.

The new laws also affect all-inclusive packages and bar crawls, limiting drinks in party areas like Magaluf to six per day, split between lunch and dinner. Two-for-one deals and happy hours are now restricted, with penalties for drinking in public or violating alcohol rules. Off-license sales are banned during certain hours to deter street drinking and anti-social behavior.

Hood advises tourists to be mindful of local regulations to ensure a harmonious coexistence with residents. While the rules may seem stringent, they aim to promote a peaceful environment for both locals and tourists. Enjoying a vacation in the Balearic Islands is still possible, as long as visitors respect the new guidelines.
