Deanne Peacock and her spouse, Sam, had long harbored a desire to bring a canine companion into their household. Their wish was fulfilled in March 2020 when they came across Ted, an 11-month-old Golden Retriever, from a local breeder in Cambridgeshire. Captivated by his playful demeanor and gentle disposition, the couple saw Ted as a perfect fit for their family.
The timing couldn’t have been more serendipitous. Merely two weeks after Ted’s arrival, the country went into lockdown, and having Ted around proved to be a source of comfort during those challenging times. However, a turning point occurred two years later when Ted developed severe skin issues, starting with incessant paw gnawing and escalating into a spreading rash.
Rushed to the vet, Ted underwent extensive treatment for severe dermatitis, which included being shaved and prescribed antibiotics, steroids, and ointments. Despite Deanne’s pet insurance contributions, the incurred costs exceeded coverage, leaving her facing over £2,000 in veterinary bills. With Ted’s health complications persisting and additional expenses looming, Deanne found herself financially strained and emotionally torn.
Forced to consider rehoming Ted for his well-being, Deanne sought assistance from Serena Rodd, an outreach officer at the pet charity Woodgreen, as a last resort. Woodgreen, known for aiding pet owners in need, stepped in to provide support and resources to alleviate the financial burden and ensure Ted’s proper care.
Through Woodgreen’s intervention, Ted received essential treatment, including ear drops and a specialized hypoallergenic diet that proved to be transformative. Deanne expressed immense gratitude for the support, emphasizing that it not only restored Ted’s health but also preserved the bond within their family.
Woodgreen’s mission revolves around securing healthy and happy homes for pets, offering assistance to owners in various forms, from emergency aid to expert guidance. The organization’s dedication to keeping pets with their families, even in times of crisis, underscores its commitment to animal welfare and the well-being of pet owners.
Deanne’s experience serves as a testament to the importance of seeking help when facing challenges with pet care. Woodgreen’s unwavering support and non-judgmental approach are instrumental in ensuring that pets like Ted receive the care they deserve, ultimately fostering enduring companionships between animals and their human families.
