Rivals has made its return to television screens, drawing attention to the captivating backdrop set primarily in the Cotswolds of the UK, featuring a striking manor. The Disney Plus series heavily relies on its rural setting, showcasing picturesque scenery and luxurious residences within the fictional county of Rutshire.
Among these settings is The Priory, the residence of Declan O’Hara in the show, a renowned Irish TV presenter and journalist. In reality, this property is privately owned by a different family and recognized as Chavenage House.
Located in Tetbury, The Priory was previously overseen by Rona Lowsley-Williams for 67 years until her passing in July 2025. She played a significant role in transforming the estate from a declining Edwardian household into a popular attraction.
Built in 1576 by Edward Stephens, The Priory stands as an Elizabethan house, designated as a Grade I listed building. It has undergone various extensions in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries, evolving from its original form while maintaining its authentic style and materials.
Chavenage House has served as a prominent filming location for numerous film and TV productions, including Rivals. Over the years, notable personalities like Eddie Redmayne, Jamie Dornan, and Aidan Turner have graced its premises.
For instance, the BBC’s Poldark featured Chavenage as the fictional Trenwith house, and it also appeared as Candleford Manor in the BBC’s Lark Rise to Candleford series from 2008. Additionally, the house was showcased in The House of Eliott, Casualty, and Dracula, among others.
Beyond its filming commitments, Chavenage House is now open to the public for tours, offering fans the opportunity to explore the real-life settings of their favorite show. Visitors can schedule tours in advance, subject to availability, as it remains a privately owned residence.
The admission fee for adults is £12 per person, with a minimum group size of 21, while children are charged £6 each. In the absence of group tours, individuals can opt for a private tour starting at £250.
