England cricket players have been advised to abstain from alcohol consumption the day after a match following the release of new guidelines post a recent incident. After the summer’s initial Test against New Zealand, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were out past midnight at Rex Rooms in London, breaching the imposed midnight curfew. Subsequently, Atkinson was involved in an altercation, leading to the injury of England’s security guard, resulting in Stokes and Atkinson being excluded from the second Test.
The England leadership expressed frustration over the situation, attributing the breach to Atkinson’s lack of awareness regarding the curfew. In response, managing director Rob Key proposed the notion of an alcohol ban, although the revised alcohol policy was shared with the players before the second Test.
Stokes decided to retire from international cricket after his return for the third Test. The Telegraph reported on the updated policy, which enforces restrictions during England men’s home series and tours, emphasizing the midnight curfew. The guidelines prohibit players from appearing in public under the influence of alcohol or posting about alcohol-related activities on social media.
Furthermore, team management or security must be informed if players are out of the team hotel after 10 pm. The rules also stipulate a period from the day before a match until the day after, during which alcohol consumption is discouraged unless explicitly approved by designated authorities.
