A candidate from the Reform party, Stuart Prior, who was previously exposed for making racist comments, has achieved success by winning seats in both county and district councils in Essex, Nigel Farage’s constituency. The offensive remarks made by Prior, such as celebrating the rape of Punjabi and Sikh women, were brought to light in a joint investigation by the Mirror and anti-racism organization Hope Not Hate (HnH). Reform’s recent victories have ended the Conservative party’s 25-year control of Essex County Council, with Prior being one of the elected officials. Additionally, the 54-year-old property director secured a seat on Rochford District Council.
Following the revelation of Prior’s derogatory posts, Reform stated it was investigating the matter, while pressure mounted for the party to take action. A Labour MP directed a question to Reform’s leader, Nigel Farage, urging the immediate suspension of Prior from the party. HnH’s Director of Campaigns, Georgie Laming, expressed dismay at Prior’s racist language, emphasizing the necessity for his expulsion from the party.
Despite Prior’s denial of being racist when confronted, evidence of his disturbing statements, including referring to white people as the “master race” and making callous remarks about women being raped, surfaced. Prior’s social media posts, which have since been deleted, sparked outrage and calls for his removal from Reform party candidacy.
In another development, a Reform candidate with links to Oswald Mosley, Andrew Mahon, has also been elected. Mahon, who openly supported the fascist leader and made controversial comments in the past, secured a position as a borough councillor in Blackburn, Lancashire. His statements praising Mosley and Enoch Powell for their views on multiculturalism have raised concerns and prompted an investigation by Reform.
The controversy surrounding Prior and Mahon has drawn attention to the Reform party’s candidate selection process and the need for greater scrutiny of candidates’ backgrounds and beliefs. Calls for accountability and decisive action against individuals espousing extremist views have intensified within the political landscape.
