During a weekend trip to Lower Largo, a quaint village in Fife, we ventured into St Andrews for a day trip. Situated approximately an hour and a half drive from Edinburgh and an hour and forty-five minutes from Glasgow, St Andrews offers a convenient escape for city dwellers.
Though renowned for its golfing heritage, St Andrews has much more to offer beyond the legendary Old Course. A must-see landmark is the Swilcan Bridge, a historic structure dating back over 700 years located on the 18th hole of the course. After capturing memorable photos at the bridge, a visit to the cozy Jigger Inn, established in the 1850s, is perfect for a delightful meal and drinks by the fireside.
Exploring the town reveals its medieval roots, with the university’s founding dating back to 1413. St Andrews attracts students from around the globe, adding a multicultural flair to the area. Notably, it is where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge first met, adding a touch of romance to its allure.
A visit to St Andrews would not be complete without exploring the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once the largest church in Scotland. Despite its dilapidated state, the cathedral’s remains offer a haunting yet captivating experience for visitors.
In addition to its historical sites, St Andrews boasts beautiful beaches like the famous West Sands Beach, featured in the iconic film “Chariots of Fire.” The town’s shopping scene is equally impressive, with a mix of high street brands and unique boutiques, including the popular Topping and Company bookstore.
To satisfy your sweet tooth, a stop at Fisher and Donaldson, a family-run bakery renowned for its fudge doughnuts, is a must. Indulge in these delectable treats filled with fresh custard and topped with delicious fudge icing.
