Electric car sales saw a significant boost of almost 60% in the previous month due to surging petrol prices driven by the Middle East conflict. Data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicated that out of over 149,200 new cars on the road in April, nearly 39,100 were battery electric vehicles. The rise in demand for electric cars is partly attributed to drivers seeking cost savings amidst escalating fuel costs resulting from the Iran war.
While total car sales increased by 24% compared to the previous year, petrol cars remained the top choice with an 8% rise in sales to 63,541 units. Conversely, diesel car sales continued to decline, dropping by 1% to 6,341 in April. Despite the milestone of the UK registering its two millionth electric car in April, the SMMT cautioned that electric vehicles might not reach the government’s targeted market share levels.
The SMMT revised its forecast for new car sales to almost 2.1 million for the year but lowered the projected market share for battery electric vehicles from 28.5% to 26.8%. The organization predicted that electric cars’ market share would only increase to 32% next year, falling short of the mandated targets for manufacturers.
The SMMT expressed concerns over uncertainty stemming from the Iran conflict, which could impact consumer interest in electric vehicles amidst inflation and rising energy prices. The organization emphasized the need for aligning policy with current market conditions to maintain Britain’s competitiveness in the automotive industry.
Colin Walker from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit highlighted the significant surge in electric vehicle sales in April, driven by rising pump prices due to Middle East tensions. He emphasized the positive impact of electric cars on reducing the UK’s reliance on oil, enhancing energy security, and contributing to achieving net-zero emissions.
James Hosking, managing director of AA Cars, noted the sustained momentum in the new car market beyond the typical March surge, indicating resilience among buyers despite economic challenges. The increasing interest in electric vehicles was attributed to uncertainties in fuel prices, driving consumers towards more cost-effective and environmentally friendly options.
While the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, affordability remains a key concern for many buyers, given factors like higher borrowing costs and household financial pressures. The industry faces challenges in balancing consumer preferences and market dynamics amidst the transition towards electric vehicles.
