A teenager described as “vulnerable” tragically ended her own life following allegations of rape at her workplace, as revealed in an inquest. The family of Lauren Hewson, who made her first suicide attempt on her 18th birthday, criticized the closure of the Cumbria police investigation, labeling it a “significant miscarriage of justice.” The inquest disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted and raped by a former staff member while working as an apprentice at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
Authorities mentioned that a man was arrested and later released on bail, but no charges were pressed due to insufficient evidence. BAE Systems emphasized their implementation of strict safeguarding measures to support and protect apprentices.
During the inquest, Lauren’s sister, Bethany Hewson, expressed deep frustration over the lack of legal justice for the perpetrator and the employer’s failure to safeguard a vulnerable young girl. She highlighted that despite being legally an adult, Lauren was still a child needing protection.
The investigation by the police continued post the teenager’s death in August 2025 and has now been concluded. Bethany testified that Lauren had blossomed into a loving and independent individual but exhibited concerning behavior changes in June of the same year.
Following her disclosure of abuse to her family and subsequent police notification, Lauren attempted suicide on her birthday and was admitted to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. After asserting she did not intend further harm to herself, medical professionals discharged her. Tragically, a week later, she was found unresponsive in her room and pronounced dead by emergency responders.
In a statement to the inquest, Lauren’s mother expressed that Lauren felt her life was irreparably damaged and saw no way out, despite her inner strength. The assistant coroner concluded that Lauren’s death was a deliberate act of suicide.
The family’s position emphasizes that Lauren’s death was directly linked to the serious allegations she made and the lack of proper safeguarding by BAE Systems. Bethany lamented the absence of adequate workplace support that could have empowered Lauren to speak out against the abuse.

In a separate statement, Cumbria Police confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man on suspicion of rape but stated that the case did not meet the evidential threshold for charges after comprehensive investigations pre and post Lauren’s death.
